Where are your records now?

Spreadsheets

Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers or a CSV file — however you’ve laid it out. Messy columns and inconsistent spellings are fine; that’s the part we sort out.

Notebooks

Decades of handwritten field notes? Once they’re typed into a spreadsheet, even roughly, we can bring them across and build them into your totals.

Another birding app

Most birding apps and websites let you export your records as a spreadsheet or CSV file. Download yours and send it over — no need to re-key a single sighting.

How switching works

1

Gather your records

Export from your old app, or save your spreadsheet. If your records are spread across several files, send them all — we’ll combine them.

2

Email them to us

Send the file to info@trip-tick.co.uk along with the email address you use for Trip Tick. We’ll get back to you if anything needs checking.

3

We tidy and import

We match species names to the AviList checklist, standardise dates and locations, and import everything into your account. Then log in and your full history is there — trips, totals and life list.

What each sighting needs

Trip Tick builds your trips, totals and reports from three things, so every record needs:

Species — common or scientific name, any spelling
Date — when you saw it (a year alone won’t place it in your year or month lists)
Location — where you saw it, such as a reserve, patch, town or country

Counts and notes are welcome but optional. A plain list of species names with no dates or places can’t be turned into trips or totals, so we may need to come back to you for the missing details.

What you get once you’ve moved in

Totals that update themselves

Life, year and month lists, plus totals for every patch, reserve and country — recalculated automatically each time you log.

Log offline in the field

Keep recording new sightings with no signal; everything syncs when you’re back in range.

One consistent species list

Names follow AviList, the unified global bird checklist, updated each year — no more juggling conflicting taxonomies.

21 detailed reports

With Premium, see your whole history in a new light: best years, top locations, country totals and more.

“The developers are very prompt to respond to any issues and were extremely helpful in porting over 40 years of birding records from spreadsheets. Can’t recommend highly enough.”

Switching questions

Does it cost anything?

No. Converting and importing your records is free, and logging in Trip Tick is free forever.

Do I need Premium?

No. Your imported records count towards your life list and totals on a free account. Premium adds the 21 reports, Leaderboards and social features.

Which file types can you take?

Excel (.xlsx or .xls), CSV, Google Sheets and Apple Numbers. If it opens as a spreadsheet, we can work with it.

How long does it take?
