Our story

Built by a birder, for birders

Trip Tick started as one birder’s frustration — and turned into something a whole community is helping to shape.

Hi — I’m the birder behind Trip Tick. I built it because I was frustrated with other apps that didn’t give me the level of reporting I wanted, or the flexibility I needed when recording my sightings. So I decided to build my own.

I shared it with a few people who wanted to try it, and after they did, they didn’t want to stop using it. That’s when I thought I’d make it public and see if we can get more people joining the Trip Tick community. All the way through, I’ve been chatting to local birders to get their ideas and feedback while testing — and that’s shaped the app enormously.

I’ve always wanted to give back to the nature that has brought me so much joy, and by building Trip Tick, this will allow me to do it. I hope the community grows and we can all give back together.

Species names & taxonomy

The species names — and the order we list them in — follow AviList, the unified global bird checklist. We sync Trip Tick to the latest AviList release once a year, so your life list always reflects current, agreed taxonomy rather than a patchwork of conflicting sources.

Giving 10% back — and growing

I’m pledging 10% of Trip Tick’s annual profits to conservation efforts and to getting young people outdoors and into nature — with the ambition to grow that to 25% over time.

The more birders who join Trip Tick, the more we can give back together. Every list you keep helps protect the wildlife we all love.
